Are You Marketing or Selling?

Do we do internet marketing or internet selling?

Strictly speaking, selling can be defined as getting a customer to take the desired action of buying the product or service which you are making available. This can be done in a number of ways. Customers can be motivated to take the desired action by any one or a combination of the following:

  • Offering an item at a reduced price
  • Offering limited availablity of an item either in the length of time or the number of items available
  • Offering bonus items with the purchase of an item

All of the components of selling are directed toward getting the customer to take the specific action of  buying a product.

Marketing in contrast often is not directed toward producing a specific action. It frequently is focused upon building a long term relationship with a customer. It can involve educating the customer, helping them to determine their needs, aiding them with problem resolution and many other actions directed toward creating a sense of value for the customer.

By presenting value you first establish a positive relatonship with a cusomer. This creates a relationship which will tend to be ongoing and one in which the customer will develop a respect for materials you present as having potential value for him. While it may take more initial effort to create a relationship with the customer than to present promotionmaterials designed to make a sale, these efforts will most likely be more productive in the long run due to repeat purchases by the customer.
