Benefits of Meaningful Blog Comments

During the coaching program with Alex Jeffreys, Alex repeated the importance of making meaningful comments when visiting other blogs rather than trying to “pimp” our own interests. While I took Alex at his word, I did not fully appreciate this until recently. I have been visiting a number of blogs on a regular basis and making comments when appropriate. As I outlined in a recent comment to Gary Simpson’s recent post titled http://motivationselfesteem.com/talk/893/is-anybody-else-overwhelmed-and-inundated.htm  “I still make the rounds of about half a dozen of my favorite blogs but often I read and move on without commenting due to time restraints. I would rather make no comment than one to which I am not able devote proper thought.”  ( yes Gary, I am quoting myself ;)  ) This philosophy has proven to be valid. I have recently been extended what I consider to be a wonderful opportunity as a result of what someone viewed in one of my comments. Had I made it a habit of commenting without trying to add meaning I am sure this opportunity would not have been extended to me.

This also exemplifies also the power of networking. This is a principle which can be very effective both on and offline. The interaction of the members of Alex’s coaching program is a perfect example of this concept taking place online. In the current economic climate this can be very important. In my opinion networking can also have negative aspects. For instance, I take offense to the flood of email promotions that surround the release of a new product. While I understand the financial implications of such promotions they still remain for me an unpalatable aspect of networking.

I would welcome your comments pro or con to my comments.

    Hi Ken,

I have been meaning to get over here for a few days - been flat out like a lizard drinking.

There is no doubt that making thoughtful or (even) provoking statements on other people’s blogs will get them to come to yours.

Ha! Now YOU are quoting yourself! Fun, isn’t it? I never realised how bloody often I did it until Linda Caroll mentioned it. Now, I’m rather conscious of it but…

    … I STILL do it!

Glad you enjoyed Linda’s session on the “Holy Grail.” We did it all again last night with me and Parkesy and half a dozen others on the call.

Ken, I used to get crapped off with the flood of email offers from every Tom, Dick and Harriett too. I don’t care too much any more. I just slam them all into a folder to look at when I feel like it - which ain’t too often. I just open the ones I want to.

Just on that score - I have ONE guy who is particularly annoying. He emails me EVERY day without fail and sometimes 2 or 3 times. Oddly, he is supposedly one of the most successful IM’s on the net. Figure that out! I just find him endlessly irritating. “Ooh, just picked my nose… gotta tell my list!” PMSL. But that is what he is like.

    Catch you later,

    Gary Simpson

    Hey Ken,
    Long time no see =D
I never realised how important it was to write meanigfull comments, i mean i knew you had too otherwise there is no point in writing them but I never realised how much people pick up on it. I dont know if I am right but I think what people tend to do is write a bit about the post but then go on a bit about themselves and their post, self-consiousley advertising their post. I think they do this because they think to write a good comment it has to be long (and i know this is really ironic because this is what I do!) but beacsue they think it has to be long when they run out of things to say about the post so they start talking about theirs, if you catc my drift! The reason I know this is because this is what I do, and I never realised how much I did it untill now, so thank you for writting it =D. Knowing me im probably doing it now! I was wondering if any of you could tell me when I’m doing it if you see my comments like that and if you knew how I could stop doing it.

    Thanx
    The Lizard
