Tommy McLaughlin has written a manual which will become an essential reference for anyone who wants to create a blog. This will be true regardless of if they are wanting to build an internet business or simply want to create a social site for family and friends to visit. The basics which a “newbie” to blogging must master are essentially the same regardless of their ultimate goal.

When I entered the relm of Internet Marketing I was a lamb entering a world dominated by lions. I quickly learned that in addition to learning the principles of internet marketing itself, I had a lot of work to do just to learn how to use the tools needed to have a basic knowledge of blogging. I was able to go to youtube and find bits and pieces of information but then I was faced with the task of trying to fit all the pieces together. Tommy has put the puzzle together for his readers by outlining the steps needed to create a blog, the proper sequence, and a very clear explanation of how to accomplish each task.

The e-book guides the reader seamlessly through how to select a domain name and how to register the selected name. He next explains how to select a host for the new domain and the importance of nameservers to get the new site online. He then provides guidence through the selection of all aspects of selecting a Wordpress theme and how to work with it. He presents options for enhancing the theme with plug-ins and ultimately walks the reader through adding their first post even including how to add pictures and video to a post.

For those planning to develop an online business Blog Setup Tutorial provides information about how to monetize a blog. How to use Search Engine optimization or SEO to promote websites is covered as well as Google rankings and their importance. With the inclusion of information on Adsense, Aweber as Google Analytics, Blog Setup Tutorials is the most complete single reference I have found concerning blog construction. I can only Imagine how much easier my own journey through blog construction would have been had a source of information such as this been available.

While Blog Setup Tutorials is largely directed toward someone new to blogging, I have found it to be helpful to me also by revealing some of the finer points of blog construction and use that were pieces of information that were new to me. I am confident that others who have been blogging for a while will also find new and helpful information.

Blog Steup Tutorials is an e-book that both the “newbie” and the veteran blogger will find helpful. Perhaps the best thing about this new release is that following in the teachings of our shared mentor Alex Jeffreys, Tommy has provided the product of his endeavor at not cost. This certainly exemplifies Alex’s tenet of providing more than is expected. Thank You Tommy!!

Those of you who have visited my blog previously will notice the new look. The new look is timed to correspond with the unveiling of the work I have been doing over the past few months. While I still intend to present information which will be useful to those who who may be new to internet marketing I also intend to begin to present more indepth information about the segment of internet marketing for which I have have developed a keen intrest. I have spent a considerable amount of time studying and gaining valuable experience in the area of Affiliate Marketing.

Along with gaining a great deal of knowledge I have been able to apply what I have learned to reach the goal I had when I began mentoring with Alex Jeffreys, I am making money online. In future posts here I plan to provide more information about the things I have learned regarding the differeng aspects of affiliate marketing and how to earn a considerable income in this area. I plan to discuss, amoung other things, how to earn an income by promoting the products of others as well as, what has become my personal favorite aspect of affiliate marketing, how to earn a healthy income in an area known as CPA Marketing in which potential customers of a vendor are asked to complete a variety of specific actions without actually selling a product.

I have observed the impact that techniques such as aritcle submission can have in attracting site traffic. I have also observed how differing styles of site banners can impact the conversion rate of a product. These are only two of the many techniques I plan to present in detail here in future posts. I would encourage you to return and read my future presentations which will be a combination of philosophy, theory and technique. I will also review products which I find to have value. Some of the products I will review will be free products while others will have costs associated with them. The common denominator of these presentations will be that they will concern items I believe to have value and not just an item from which I may benefit financially.

I am excited about the things which I plan to present and hope that you will return on a regular basis and be a part of things through your comments.

Ken

During the coaching program with Alex Jeffreys, Alex repeated the importance of making meaningful comments when visiting other blogs rather than trying to “pimp” our own interests. While I took Alex at his word, I did not fully appreciate this until recently. I have been visiting a number of blogs on a regular basis and making comments when appropriate. As I outlined in a recent comment to Gary Simpson’s recent post titled http://motivationselfesteem.com/talk/893/is-anybody-else-overwhelmed-and-inundated.htm “I still make the rounds of about half a dozen of my favorite blogs but often I read and move on without commenting due to time restraints. I would rather make no comment than one to which I am not able devote proper thought.” ( yes Gary, I am quoting myself ;) ) This philosophy has proven to be valid. I have recently been extended what I consider to be a wonderful opportunity as a result of what someone viewed in one of my comments. Had I made it a habit of commenting without trying to add meaning I am sure this opportunity would not have been extended to me.

This also exemplifies also the power of networking. This is a principle which can be very effective both on and offline. The interaction of the members of Alex’s coaching program is a perfect example of this concept taking place online. In the current economic climate this can be very important. In my opinion networking can also have negative aspects. For instance, I take offense to the flood of email promotions that surround the release of a new product. While I understand the financial implications of such promotions they still remain for me an unpalatable aspect of networking.

I would welcome your comments pro or con to my comments.

I have been away from this site for a bit putting my energies toward researching and planning my approach to entering the area of affiliate marketing. You may remember from an earlier post that I have already created a couple of sites in this area. After allowing the sites to run for a couple of weeks I am now evaluating and refining them. I have, however, continued to visit blogs and have found a couple of posts which I feel contain important information which merits my mention of them here along with the suggestion you visit and read them.

Linda Caroll has written a post on her blog that provides some very important information about blog hacking. Follow this link to find this important information. http://lindacaroll.com/web/sattanorg-wordpress-hack-steals-google-traffic.html. Linda is the behind the scene genius behind the makeover of Gary Simpson’s “Temple” a few weeks ago and certainly can speak( or write) with authority on web issues.

Gary Simpson has also added an excellent post ( http://motivationselfesteem.com/talk/845/warning-posts-and-comments-can-be-dangerous-to-you.htm )to his blog reminding us of the potential negative consequences of our online activities. Often when we are creating content for placement on the internet we feel a false sense of privacy and security because we are in the protective comfort of our home. Gary’s post along with the comments attached to serve as a reminder that our computers are a window to the world. They are a window through which we may look but also a window through which we may also be viewed.

Several blogs have put up posts commenting about what the students completing the coaching program presented by Alex Jeffreys should do now that the program is completed. Gary Simpson has once again distilled a voluminous amount of material into a concise summary of information as well as a series of questions each of us (both students of Alex as well as non students) should periodically use to evaluate our progress in any endeavor we make. Garry Parkes presented an outstanding example of what can be accomplished with the materials presented in the coaching program.

I would encourage each of the remaining students in the coaching program to take a few minutes to reflect and comment upon where they were before the mentoring program began, where you are now and where you hope to go using the information presented in the program. I believe we each will find that we have made great strides in our journey.

Here is my list of 25 things about me.

1. Kenneth Douglas (as in my site name ) is my first and middle name. I have chosen to use them online because I was unable to secure a domain for my first and last name (which by the way is Garrett). I’m sorry for the confusion I have caused some of you.

2. In my offline life I am a dentist and have practiced for 34 years. This is something, which like Gary and his martial arts training, I do not tend to make widely known outside of my professional settings. By doing this I often hear the phrase “You don’t act like a dentist” when someone becomes aquainted with me before they know my profession.. I have found that people often react to their concept of who or what I should be based upon their concept of my profession rather than me as an individual. ..

3. I have been described as being obsessive in the sense that when I become interested in something I tend to become totally immeresed as I pursue my interest (an example can be seen in #5 below). I prefer to describe myself as passionate about my interests. ( this has been recognized as a personality trait of persons who choose my profession)

4. I tend to be a perfectionest being described as a “type A” personality. (Again a professional personality trait)

5. I have done 5 102 mile bicycle rides in Death Valley as part of a fund raising event for The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

6. I am a Type I or juvenile diabetic but I choose not to let this limit my level of activity I have choosen to view this merely as an inconvenience rather than a limitation.

7. My newest passion is the houseboat my wife and i designed and had built 2 years ago. We now spend the majority of our free time on it. It is also the basis for my desire to develop an online business. I want an income stream which will not be dependent upon location. I want to be able to manage it just as easily from my home office or the front deck of my boat.

8.. I am an animal lover. We presently have three dogs in all sizes, from a 100+ pound Great Pyrenees, to a 30 pound Beagle/ Hound mix with a Labrador/Austrtalian Shepard mix stuck in the middle for good measure. In the past I have owned and shown horses ( Morgans, American Saddlebreds and Hackney ponies).

9. I enjoy watching NASCAR racing and college basketball.

10. I enjoy doing geneology research, connecting with my history and learning about those members of my family who preceeded me.

11. Through my geneology studies I have established that I am 1/16th Cherokee Indian. This has led me to do a great deal of reading in the areas of Native American history, religion, medicine and philosophys.

12. I am a coffee drinker ( sorry Gary, but I need my poison). As such, I enjoy experiencing coffee from various parts of the world. My favorite variety of coffee comes from the Blue Mountain region of Jamaica. I prefer to brew my coffee by using freshly ground beans in a french press.

13. I prefer to drink coffee without cream or sweetener but when drinking tea (hot or iced) i prefer it with sweetener.

14. While I am not generally a creature of habit, I enjoy relaxing on Sunday mornings with a couple of cups of coffee. When on the boat I enjoy the solitude of watching the early morning lake activity from the upper deck.

15. I am usually in the process of reading multiple books at the same time. Usually a self-help or management type book, a fast paced action type fiction book, and something of a historical or biographical nature

16. I am a student of the American Civil War. I enjoy reading about this period and also visiting the battlefields of this conflict.

17. I must be active. For instance, I cannot enjoy relaxing on the beach doing nothing. I must be up and moving about. This prompted me to begin scuba diving on a trip to the Bahamas.

18. I have been studying martial arts for about 2 years. This has given me insight to having confidence in ones abilities with out a need to publicize or draw attention to those talents. It has also helped me to refocus on the fact that there will always be someone who has greater knowledge from whom I should learn and also someone with lesser knowledge who I should be willing to teach.

19. I collect shot glasses as souvenirs of the places I visit. I divide them into three categories, cities, state and provences and attractions or events.

20. I prefer small town or rural settings rather than large cities.

21. I enjoy travel. Two places I have not had the opportunity to visit but hope to in the future are Ireland and Australia.

22. I have become aware that in life you learn much more by sitting quietly and observing than by making everyone aware of your presence.

23. I am what my wife describes as a “pack rat”, I never want to throw something away because “I might need it” I must confess I am improving in this area thanks to her tutelage.

24. As a result of the personality flaw revealed in #23 my sense of organization is best described as “stacking”. To the casual observer it appears to be chaos but mentally I can go directly to what I want when necessary. My desk is a monument to this disorder.

25. I enjoy amateur photography

I hope this has been enlightening. It was more difficult to compile than i had anticipated when I started. Perhaps this was because of the way I subconciously want to filter the image I present to the world or simply because I am not very exciting, I will leave that determination to some brave soul with nothing better to do than to explore my psyche.

This is a red letter day in for my experiences in Internet marketing. One of my goals for 2009 was to begin to earn an income on line. Today one of the datafeed websites I created a week ago earned it’s first commission. This affirms the choice I made to begin to persue the area of affiliate marketing. While this may seem minor to some, this is a huge day for me in creating my online business.
