Internet marketing…..finding our success….

Success comes to him who waits…..

This is a saying we all have heard. I have also seen this follow up phrase

….as long as he that waits works like h*ll while he is waiting.

I have recently read several comments about feelings of being overwhelmed. Personally, seeing those comments gave me a sense of relief. They expressed feelings that I too have been dealing with. While I write the following from a personal perspective I am sure that there are many newbies with similar stories.

As a “newbie” I had a very strong motivation for success but very little experience when it came to even the basic tools of creating an online business. There are many in the group who began the Alex Jeffreys coaching program with volumes more experience than I. I feel I have accomplished much in a short period of time. I have learned how to:

  • secure a domain name
  • set up hosting for the domain
  • create a website/blog
  • learn to upload files using filezilla
  • learn to create and use forms with aweber
  • learn to use and create squeeze and landing pages
  • write an eBook, and learn to convert it into a PDF document and place it on the internet
  • begin outsourcing tasks such as eBook cover design.
  • utilize basic HTML to manage my blog, designing squeeze and landing pages
  • begin to make basic videos and integrate them into my skill set

In addition to these items, I have spent 3+ hours per week participating in the learning modules plus similar amounts of time in the interactive and brainstorming sessions. Add to this the time spent trying to apply the knowledge acquired in the modules such as developing an “oil rig” by blog hopping, visiting other blogs and trying to make comments with content which entice readers to visit my blog and one can see that considerable amounts of time are involved.

When I see the statistic than only 1% of online businesses are successful I can understand why. The things listed above must be done in addition to working my present job and devoting time to my family obligations. Without the understanding of my family it would be impossible for me to make the progress I have to this point. Fortunately, they share my vision of a desired future.

Overwhelmed? Not yet. I am only ”whelmed ” to this point. When I become “overwhelmed” the thoughts of doubt will begin to creep in and  I will begin to  loose what I have called the “fire in the gut”. I will begin to decrease the effort I am willing to put foward and eventually my dream of a successful online business will begin to fade and eventually disappear.

I have expressed to others that “failure is not a part of my nature”. The key to remaining “whelmed” but not “overwhelmed” is to move at my own pace. I must realize that I am not in a race against the other members of the mentoring group, I am in a journey to change my life. It will take as long as it takes.

As long as I learn the skills needed and how to apply them I will reach my goal. Time is not the critical factor. What is critical is that I never loose sight of my goal and that I progress toward that goal at a steady pace.

I hope that i have expressed what many of us “newbies”, and perhaps some that are not so new,  are feeling.

Feel free to agree, disagree, or express another viewpoint.

I couldn’t agree with you more. I found myself nodding my head at practically everything you said (except for the last 4 bullet points - I haven’t got that far yet, but I will!)

When there are so many people who have greater experience and time or fewer other commitments, it can be an issue, but I do compare myself to the tortoise in the fable and know that as long as I keep going, still have that ‘fire in belly’ I will make this work at my pace (and maybe overtake a few hares!).

    My motivations are two fold:

The first is to be able to spend more time eventually with my family and support my two children in what they are doing.

At the moment I am having to put in so many hours working on getting this set up that I can’t do that as easily. But I am showing my daughter what I am doing and she is eager to do something similar, so I am teaching and learning at the same time. I have just got her own domain name and hosting sorted out so that she can start her own Wordpress blog.

My second is to be able to make enough money to pay off the credit card, the loan and eventually the mortgage.

I have split those down into smaller targets for myself as I know that it is not going to happen all at once.

I believe that they are good enough motivations for me to succeed and I’m certainly not going to get too worried by all this talk of problems in the economy if I can make my own economy. I do understand that it is a huge issue though for so many people - but they say more millionaires are made during a recession than at any other time.

What I think is important is that in any team there are always people at different levels. We should all do 3 things:

    1. Learn from those with more experience

    2. Support those at a similar level

3.Help those who have less experience or who are struggling with something.

If we all stick to these 3 things then there is no reason why we cannot all achieve our aims, whatever they may be, but all at our own speed.

And always say thank you to others. That way communities, friendships, parterships and successes are built.

Well done Ken for putting this down in these words.

    Hilary

    Hilary,

Your coments are great observations. There is always someone who has done more or knows more the us from whom we can learn. Support from our peers is important because we are not at the top of our game 1005% of the time and occasionally need a lift. Finally, we need to pay back what has been given to us.

    Ken!

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful post! This is a tribute to your progress.

I was gonna write something very similar - I might still do that coz my journey and experience is so much different to yours. We ALL struggle on different levels. I hear Alex Jeffreys say this all the time. No doubt you do too.

I want to thank Hilary Dickinson for alerting me to this post. Ah, the power of triangulation. See a tip in that last sentence?

Well done Ken. Well written. Fabulous content. A lot of you newer guys are reaching new platforms. You certainly are.

    Regards

Nice work getting started and getting your blog setup. Im trying to get a complete list of all the students for my blogroll and to get to know everyone. Please email with your full name, link, and twitter link if you have one. Best wishes, Ross The Boss

    Hi Ken,

I’ve just visited Nikki’s blog and read your comment and your offer to come to your site and leave a comment.

I’ve just read the post above and feel this is the correct attitude to take in future - it takes as long as it takes. It is a journey not a destination. I guess I’ve been mis-led in to how easy everything is and how quickly the money rolls in by some of the gurus. Must be patient and keep failing forwards quickly.

I’m interested in how you managed to sort your outsourcing. Any advice would be appreciated.

I’m in the process of writing my own e-book and have found using voice-recognition software and creating mind-maps at Mindmeister.com speeds everything up. There’s a post about it on my blog.

Thanks for your support Ken, if you need any assistance with anything leave a comment on my blog.

Together we can change the lives of many for the better.

    To your success,

    Dave

P.S. What film was the Clint Eastwood reference from?

  7. Paull Hamilton Says:

Hi Ken, I am totally with you on the point you raised about losing the ‘fire in your gut’. It is only natural to feel anxious about your progress, almost daily I am working and thinking ‘why is everything taking so long to get going’, but that in no way diminishes my desire to carry on. Everyone works at the pace they are comfortable with, and sometimes you have to keep a pace that you are NOT comfortable with, but at the moment thats the name of the game. I intend to carry on giving my all to this course and what we are all trying to achieve, and, as one of your other commenters said ‘it will take as long as it takes’. Would appreciate your visiting my site if you ever get the time.

Hi Ken, my apologies but when I posted my comment above, I neglected to change my url to http:// only. I really would appreciate your visiting my site to see my latest post as it concerns a poll about Alex. Thanks in anticipation.

Very Nice way of expressing the road of success.
The two best things I liked is “fire in the gut” and “failure is not my nature”. Thats a good thought. You can always move ahead with this. Hope you get all the success you deserve.

  10. Nigel Yip Says:

    Hey Ken

Absolutely wonderful post and thank you for sharing with us all what your have learnt and how you are determined to succeed and not let anything get in the way.

I totally agree with you that not just you, but all of us have learnt a lot and have been exceptionally productive in a very short space of time.

I mean, how long would it have taken us all to set up own blogs on our own initiative, without somebody like Alex guiding us, or kept hammering down and telling us that we need to get a blog setup and running.

Plus, I visited a few internet marketers blog where there has been little comments or had been last updated a year or more ago so the support of all the students each commenting on each others blog has been … what I think as being most beneficial, plus it has also been one of the fundamental key motivational factors which, I believe will help drive every each one of us towards our much deserved success.

    Anyway all the best
    Nigel

PS: Have you got the Alex Jeffreys Dance urge? Lol!!!
