My list of 25 things about me

Here is my list of 25 things about me.

1.  Kenneth Douglas (as in my site name ) is my first and middle name. I have chosen to use them online because I was unable to secure a domain for my first and last name (which by the way is Garrett). I’m sorry for the confusion I have caused some of you.

2. In my offline life I am a dentist and have practiced for 34 years. This is something, which like Gary and his martial arts training, I do not tend to make widely known outside of my professional settings. By doing this I often hear the phrase “You don’t act like a dentist” when someone becomes aquainted with me before they know my profession.. I have found that people often react to their concept of who or what I should be based upon their concept of my profession rather than me as an individual. ..

3. I have been described as being obsessive in the sense that when I become interested in something I tend to become totally immeresed as I pursue my interest (an example can be seen in #5 below). I prefer to describe myself as passionate about my interests. ( this has been recognized as a personality trait of persons who choose my profession)

4. I tend to be a perfectionest being described as a “type A” personality. (Again a professional personality trait)

5. I have done 5 102 mile bicycle rides in Death Valley as part of a fund raising event for The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

6. I am a Type I or juvenile diabetic but I choose not to let this limit my level of activity I have choosen  to view this merely as an inconvenience rather than a limitation.

7. My newest passion is the houseboat my wife and i designed and had built 2 years ago. We now spend the majority of our free time on it. It is also the basis for my desire to develop an online business. I want an income stream which will not be dependent upon location. I want to be able to manage it just as easily from my home office or the front deck of my boat.

8.. I am an animal lover. We presently have three dogs in all sizes, from a 100+ pound Great Pyrenees, to a 30 pound Beagle/ Hound mix with a Labrador/Austrtalian Shepard mix stuck in the middle for good measure. In the past I have owned and shown horses ( Morgans, American Saddlebreds and Hackney ponies).

9. I enjoy watching NASCAR racing and college basketball.

10. I enjoy doing geneology research, connecting with my history and learning about those members of my family who preceeded me.

11. Through my geneology studies I have established that I am 1/16th Cherokee Indian. This has led me to      do a great deal of reading in the areas of Native American history, religion, medicine and philosophys.

12. I am a coffee drinker ( sorry Gary, but I need my poison). As such, I enjoy experiencing coffee from various parts of the world. My favorite variety of coffee comes from the Blue Mountain region of Jamaica. I prefer to brew my coffee by using freshly ground beans in a french press.

13. I prefer to drink coffee without cream or sweetener but when drinking tea (hot or iced) i prefer it with sweetener.

14. While I am not generally a creature of habit, I enjoy relaxing on Sunday mornings with a couple of cups of coffee. When on the boat I enjoy the solitude of watching the early morning lake activity from the upper deck.

15. I am usually in the process of reading multiple books at the same time. Usually a self-help or management type book, a fast paced action type fiction book, and something of a historical or biographical nature

16. I am a student of the American Civil War. I enjoy reading about this period and also visiting the battlefields of this conflict.

17. I must be active. For instance, I cannot enjoy relaxing on the beach doing nothing.  I must be up and moving about. This prompted me to begin scuba diving on a trip to the Bahamas.

18. I have been studying martial arts for about 2 years. This has given me insight to having confidence in ones abilities with out a need to publicize or draw attention to those talents. It has also helped me to refocus on the fact that there will always be someone who has greater knowledge from whom I should learn and also someone with lesser knowledge who I should be willing to teach.

19. I collect shot glasses as souvenirs of the places I visit. I divide them into three categories, cities, state and provences and attractions or events.

20. I prefer small town or rural settings rather than large cities.

21. I enjoy travel. Two places I have not had the opportunity to visit but hope to in the future are Ireland and Australia.

22. I have become aware  that in life you learn much more by sitting quietly and observing than by making everyone aware of your presence.

23. I am what my wife describes as a “pack rat”, I never want to throw something away because “I might need it”  I must confess I am improving in this area thanks to her tutelage.

24. As a result of the personality flaw revealed in #23 my sense of organization is best described as “stacking”. To the casual observer it appears to be chaos but mentally I can go directly to what I want when necessary. My desk is a monument to this disorder.

25. I enjoy  amateur photography

I hope this has been enlightening. It was more difficult to compile than i had anticipated when I started. Perhaps this was because of the way I subconciously want to filter the image I present to the world or simply because I am not very exciting, I will leave that determination to some brave soul with nothing better to do than to explore my psyche.

    Hi Ken

Well done on getting this list done. I have found it really interesting and enjoyable to read about the different people who are taking this course.

It is interesting though how we all seem to have one or two things in common (not necessarily the same) with other people. Perhaps we should do a poll on this!

Anyway to look at yours - #2 My husband was one until he gave up about 5 years ago - too many problems with being single handed in the National Health Service. We had set up our own practice in which I was oficially the Practice Manager, but General Dogsbody better described what I did. So I understand where you are coming from with this.

I enjoy #10 - see my comment on Paull Hamilton’s blog, though I don’t have the time at the moment to spend on it.

#23 - we have those in our family - I and my 2 sisters have just spent 3 days tidying up my aunt’s house after we moved her into sheltered accommodation. This is not the first visit by any means and we still haven’t finished.

My husband has some of those traits, which at the moment are reflected throughout our house, but I do find a help at http://flylady.net. I don’t want to leave the same problem to my children at a later date as we are facing now.

The one I agree with most?

#22 - we were given two ears and one mouth for a reason. I am a great people watcher.

Anyway great list and I will mark you off as mission complete.

    Hilary

    Hi Ken,

GREAT list! I really enjoy reading these lists. OK. A few comments - random comments - LOL!

#1 - that confused the heck out of me at the start.

#2 - I NEVER would have guessed that. I thought you “looked” like an engineer. Crazy huh?

    #3 & #4 & #15 & #17 & #23 & #24 - Same with me.

#18 - I agree. Most people have completely the incorrect impression of martial arts. It is fuelled by the stupidity we see on the Hollywood screens and also the idiots who obtain a small amount of training then use it foolishly to hurt others. That is ENTIRELY the wrong portrayal and attitude. No wonder so many people arrive at such erroneous conclusions about martial arts. I pretty much get sick of trying to correct falsehoods and that is why I prefer, in general, not to talk about it.

There is a presence about people who study martial arts. If I meet somebody I don’t know and they have a refined ability in this area then I can sense it. I know that sounds Obi-wan-Kenobi-ish but I can. [heh - Ken - such a play on words there... obi and Ken. I just thought about the significance as I was typing it. Too funny. Just to explain to others - "obi" is the Japanese word for belt and Ken, well, that is YOUR name - LOL!]

#22 - I know many will find this just about impossible to believe but SAME here. I absorb knowledge and then “regurgitate” it in my own style. That is why I rarely, if ever, put my hand up in the webinars. I am too busy listening, watching and taking notes. I don’t need to hear my own voice.

Good stuff Ken. I really enjoyed getting to know all this about you.

@ Hilary - I have talked with some involved in you National Health Service and have heard of the problems there.

I do my geneology research in spurts. When I do get started trying to track something down I tend to obsess with finding a result.

@ Gary - Thanks for popping over from the “Temple”. Regarding the profession, I surprise a lot of people with that as i commented about in #2. It surprises me that you would not be totally organized with a place for everything and everything in it’s place.

    Ken
